Marching the Ridgeway
On Thursday 5th August 12 members of the 4626 Aeromedical Evacuation Squadron, Royal Air Force Reserves, will begin the daunting task of Marching the Ridgeway – an 87.5 mile hike along Britain’s oldest road in the hope of raising at least £10,000 for Help for Heroes and Troop Aid.
The aim is to march from Ivinghoe Beacon in Bedfordshire to Overton Hill in Wiltshire in just over two days, finally finishing at the Squadrons home at RAF Lyneham by 3pm on Saturday 7th August. Training for this arduous event started several months ago and all team members have already notched up several 100 miles, and countless blisters, in preparation for this hike.
4626 Squadron is a unit of medical Reservists who specialise in the Aeromedical Evacuation of casualties in areas such as Afghanistan and Iraq. In recent years many members of the Squadron have served alongside their regular counterparts to ensure that our service personnel receive the highest possible standard of medical care from point of wounding, all the way home to the UK. Most members of the Squadron work for the NHS on a full time basis as Doctors, Nurses or Paramedics although some work for other organisations and train and qualify with the RAF Reserves as a Medic - all give up their valuable free time to be members of the Squadron, delivering the quality of care our service men and women deserve.
The Squadron’s members have seen at first hand the incredible work that Help for Heroes and Troop Aid are doing - the former is already well known and needs little explanation, the latter offers immediate help and support for the casualties they fly and is equally deserving of support.
Colin Mathieson, a Commercial Director in his civilian career and Medical Support Officer with the RAF Reserves, is organising this event. He says: ‘The response from members of my Unit when I suggested this charity event was mixed to say the least! Almost 88 miles in just over two days is going to be incredibly tough, and raising £10k is a very big ask – but we are well on our way, the team of 12 volunteers has been training hard and now the work of raising the money for these two very worthy charities starts in earnest. I’m sure that we will all doubt our sanity along the way, but knowing the money we raise will make such a difference too many of the casualties we treat will ultimately get us through it’.

Tin Cup Challenge Shirley Golf Club

Its golf, but not as we know it!
The challenge has been thrown down to Midland businessmen and women to play a whole round of golf with nothing but a 7-iron and raise thousands of pounds for one of the most deserving charities in the country.
The Tin Cup Challenge will pitch teams of golfers against each other with only their trusted mid-iron to get them around Shirley Golf Club’s challenging course.
Participants in the Tin Cup Challenge on September 9 will raise money for Troop Aid.
The idea to play an entire round with just a 7-iron – the golfers will have to use a putter on Shirley’s pristine greens – is based on the Kevin Costner movie Tin Cup in which the film’s hero has to complete his round with just a 7-iron after throwing all his other clubs into a lake in a fit of pique.
It is hoped between 20 and 25 teams will take up the challenge to raise money for Troop Aid. Each player has to pledge to raise at least £200 – or £800 for a four-ball – which ‘buys’ them into the novel tournament.
The trophies will be presented at the Troop Aid Ball on September 11th.
Any golfer wishing to take part in the Tin Cup Challenge or sponsors wishing to get involved can register his or her interest or enter a team by visiting www.tincupchallenge.co.uk
or by contacting Lee Cassidy on 0121 270 0371 or
