Bastion 2 Birmingham is a charity event which will take place at the Main Entrance of the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham (QEHB), the hospital where the UK's military patients are treated. The event will be taking place over a 48 hour period, commencing on Saturday 23rd July 2011.
The aim is to collectively run and cycle the distance from Camp Bastion Field Hospital, Afghanistan, to QEHB in under 48 hours. This distance is a whopping 3,580 miles!! We'll be using five treadmills and five static bikes to cover 75 miles each hour!! This event will replicate the journey travelled from Afghanistan to Birmingham, where our wounded and injured service personnel continue with their physical and emotional recovery.
We have a team of elite personnel participating in the challenge as well as many other volunteers who will contribute to achieving our aim.
All monies raised will be divided between military patients fund at Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham Charity, SSAFA Norton House, Troop Aid and ABF The Soldiers Charity. All of these charity organisations provide key support to our injured service personnel and their families and we hope to raise awareness of these organisations within the local community.

Lord Mayor of Sheffield 10k Run

INSPIRATIONAL South Yorkshire war hero Ben Parkinson has set himself another gruelling charity challenge - taking part in the Sheffield Lord Mayor's 10km run side by side with the team of solicitors who helped him secure vital cash to fund his rehabilitation and recovery.
Lance Bombardier Parkinson will walk with Irwin Mitchell's specialist Armed Forces team on the run at Don Valley Stadium on April 17.
It will be one of the first times Ben, who lost both legs and broke his back, hips and ribs in a landmine blast in Afghanistan, has walked on his prosthetic legs in public. He has vowed to travel as far as he can to support the team and help them raise cash for forces charity Troop Aid.
The 26-year-old said: "Irwin Mitchell has supported me and my family so much and in Troop Aid the team is raising money for a valuable and worthwhile cause.
"I'm delighted to be able to help out and hope they can achieve their goals."
Ben, from Bessacarr, Doncaster, added: "It has been a challenge learning to walk on my new prosthetic legs but I'm beginning to get the hang of it. My rehabilitation has been going really well and I hope to continue making good progress."
The money will help to provide grab bags of basic essentials for patients of military hospitals who arrive without their personal belongings or clothes. The charity sponsors two rooms at Selly Oak Hospital in Birmingham. Log on to www.justgiving.com/Jenny-Barton to sponsor Ben.

Marching the Ridgeway
On Thursday 5th August 12 members of the 4626 Aeromedical Evacuation Squadron, Royal Air Force Reserves, will begin the daunting task of Marching the Ridgeway – an 87.5 mile hike along Britain’s oldest road in the hope of raising at least £10,000 for Help for Heroes and Troop Aid.
The aim is to march from Ivinghoe Beacon in Bedfordshire to Overton Hill in Wiltshire in just over two days, finally finishing at the Squadrons home at RAF Lyneham by 3pm on Saturday 7th August. Training for this arduous event started several months ago and all team members have already notched up several 100 miles, and countless blisters, in preparation for this hike.
4626 Squadron is a unit of medical Reservists who specialise in the Aeromedical Evacuation of casualties in areas such as Afghanistan and Iraq. In recent years many members of the Squadron have served alongside their regular counterparts to ensure that our service personnel receive the highest possible standard of medical care from point of wounding, all the way home to the UK. Most members of the Squadron work for the NHS on a full time basis as Doctors, Nurses or Paramedics although some work for other organisations and train and qualify with the RAF Reserves as a Medic - all give up their valuable free time to be members of the Squadron, delivering the quality of care our service men and women deserve.
The Squadron’s members have seen at first hand the incredible work that Help for Heroes and Troop Aid are doing - the former is already well known and needs little explanation, the latter offers immediate help and support for the casualties they fly and is equally deserving of support.
Colin Mathieson, a Commercial Director in his civilian career and Medical Support Officer with the RAF Reserves, is organising this event. He says: ‘The response from members of my Unit when I suggested this charity event was mixed to say the least! Almost 88 miles in just over two days is going to be incredibly tough, and raising £10k is a very big ask – but we are well on our way, the team of 12 volunteers has been training hard and now the work of raising the money for these two very worthy charities starts in earnest. I’m sure that we will all doubt our sanity along the way, but knowing the money we raise will make such a difference too many of the casualties we treat will ultimately get us through it’.

We include a link to Sqn Ldr Mathieson's (4626 SQN) Ridgeway Challenge. This gruelling event takes place in September and also supports Troop Aid.
4626 SQN Royal Auxiliary Air Force are based at RAF Lyneham. We provide trained personnel in support of the RAF's Tactical Medical Wing on operations overseas. Our Nurses, Paramedics & Medical Assistants are deployed to Afghanistan to support medical emergency teams and bolster our aeromedical evacuation capability. We are great advocates for the comfort bags. We can confirm how the value of the 'grab bag' as we see how much they are appreciated by wounded troops. That is why this year the squadron have chosen to support Troop Aid, creating greater awareness of your excellent service and hopefully raise some funds.
